Problem Gambling(Pachinko / Pachislot Machine) Helpline
RECOVERY SUPPORT NETWORK
RECOVERY SUPPORT NETWORK (hereafter RSN) is a nonprofit organization,
offering the telephone consultation service to people afflicted with machine gambling
(pachinko or pachislot machine), the so-called “problem gamblers” and their family
members or friends.
For the purpose of promoting measures for problem gambling, RSN was established
in 2006, with great efforts of Zen Nihon Yuugi Jigyo Kyoudou Kumiai Rengoukai
(All-Japan Game Business Cooperative Federations), which is the nationwide union of
pachinko parlors. It is now funded by membership dues and donations, although since
the 2011 fiscal year, our activities have also been backed by Pachinko-pachisuro Sangyo
21seikikai(Pachinko-Pachislot Industry the 21st Century Society), which consists of 14
associations relating to the pachinko or pachislot industry, including All-Japan Game
Business Cooperative Federations.
RSN’s approach to problem gambling ranges from the telephone counseling helpline
to the networking of social resources concerned. Our helpline service receives more than
1,000 calls a year. Approximately 80% of them are the first-time consultation, and more
than 60% of our callers are problem gamblers. Some callers are given information on the
social resources for problem gambling. If necessary, they are advised to get in contact
with their local mutual-aid groups, such as Gamblers Anonymous or Gam-Anon ones.
Our consultation service will be available by e-mail in the future.
In addition, RSN has conducted surveys and developed a recovery-support program
for problem gamblers. Moreover, we have hosted some lectures for social enlightenment
to provide a wide variety of information on problem gambling.
In order to arrest this problem, it is extremely significant to share our knowledge with
the people working on this problem. If you are interested in our RSN’s activities in Japan,
